The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers several graduate degree options for advanced study in civil and environmental engineering.

An advanced degree can enhance employment options in industry, government, or academia.
Students may complete the ME either on-grounds, or through the Virginia Engineering Online program. Students completing an M.S. or Ph.D. in Civil Engineering are actively involved in the department's research program.

Ph.D. in Civil Engineering
The Ph.D. is an advanced graduate degree for students wishing to contribute to knowledge creation through independent, original, cutting-edge research. The Ph.D. in Civil Engineering provides a springboard for careers as an academician, as a researcher, as a consultant or in management/leadership within a university, institute, industry or government setting.

M.S. in Civil Engineering
The Master of Science (M.S.) is a graduate degree for those who desire not only to acquire fundamental knowledge but also to contribute to the advancement of knowledge through independent, original research. This program provides a springboard for careers as an academician, as a researcher, as a consultant or in management/leadership within a university, institute, industry, or government setting.

M.E. in Civil Engineering
The M.E. degree is a coursework-based degree without a thesis. It is intended for individuals who seek to deepen their training in Civil and Environmental Engineering in preparation for a career in Civil Engineering or other closely related fields. Students may elect to pursue the ME degree on-Grounds in Charlottesville or remotely via VIRGINIA ENGINEERING ONLINE (VEO).
