Research
Our department includes traditional academic and research areas in civil and environmental engineering at UVA such as transportation engineering, environmental engineering, water resources engineering, structural engineering, and construction engineering.
We also have three interdisciplinary research areas, described below, that emphasize new perspectives and priorities in civil and environmental engineering for addressing pressing societal challenges.
-
Built Environment
The built environment is the roads, buildings, drinking water facilities, and other infrastructure systems that serve society and we focus our research on increasing the equity, durability, and resiliency of this built environment.
-
Sustainable Systems
Civil and environmental engineers work to advance sustainable systems by seeking to understand and mitigate the impacts of human activities on the natural environment.
-
Smart Cities
Many of the systems that civil and environmental engineers design, build, and maintain are going through a revolution involving the adoption of technological advances.
