A number of BME graduate students will earn both a Ph.D. in BME from the School of Engineering and an M.D. from the School of Medicine through UVA's Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP). In this program students conduct high-quality, high-impact research and integrate this with medical training and practice. This is the groundwork for pioneering advances in clinical practice through research.

For MSTP students, Ph.D. training begins after two years of medical school. Students pursue a modified schedule of required BME coursework and complete a single ELECTIVE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE (EEE). The Ph.D. training period normally lasts 3.5 - 4 years. After the dissertation defense, medical school resumes. MSTP students are supported with full tuition, fees, health insurance, and a stipend throughout their entire training period.
