Degree Program Requirements
Degree program requirements, milestones, and planning.
Required Hours
30 credit hours, or ten 3-credit courses, is the class requirement by all UVA online master’s degree programs. Students are strongly encouraged to get pre-approval from their advisor for all classes they wish to take, to ensure that each class will count towards their degree.
Grades and Grade Point Average (GPA)
Only courses in which a grade of C or better is achieved can be applied toward the degree. GPA calculation includes all grades, however. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 must be maintained at all times. A student is placed on academic probation should his or her GPA fall below 3.0. If the GPA cannot be raised to 3.0 or higher, the student will be subject to dismissal from the program. These cases are monitored by the Engineering School Graduate Registrar's Office.
Transfer Credits
A transfer form should be submitted with the Plan of Study if classes taken at other participating universities are to be applied toward a University of Virginia degree. A maximum of 15 credits may be transferred into a VEO degree program. Courses to be transferred should be approved by the appropriate faculty advisor and/or UVA Engineering School instructor (for equivalent course review) before they are taken. Transfer courses are reviewed to ensure that they are of appropriate content and rigor, and not a duplicate of other course content already counting towards the degree. Transfer courses cannot be taken in the same term one is graduating. Transfer forms can be found on the UVA SEAS Graduate Enrolled Student Forms page. The direct link can be found here: Request Approval of Transfer Credits Form.
Program Assessment Forms
The School of Engineering and Applied Science requires three program outcome assessment forms for all graduate Master of Engineering students. There are five program assessment forms in total, but only three will be completed for each student before degree completion. A faculty member familiar with the student's work and from the student's department should complete the forms. Generally, these forms are completed in the final, graduating semester.
