Shelby Fields Earns Peer Recognition for Research with Electroceramic Materials
Fields was first runner-up for top paper at the 2019 American Ceramic Society Electronic Materials and Applications conference.Shelby Fields, a Ph.D. student in materials science and engineering, was a first runner-up for top paper at the 2019 American Ceramic Society Electronic Materials and Applications conference. This international gathering focused on fundamental properties and processing of ceramic and electroceramic materials and their applications.

Gary Shiflet Reflects on His Role as National Science Foundation Program Manager
Shiflet Sees Tremendous Growth in the Field of Metals and Alloys.Gary Shiflet, William G Reynolds Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, will soon return to Charlottesville following a three-year appointment as the National Science Foundation's program director of topical materials research. Shiflet embraced this opportunity to do “big time service” while shepherding U.S. research in alloys and metals.

Petra Reinke Seeks to Create New Materials with Unique Electronic and Optical Qualities
Petra Reinke uses sabbatical to conduct research with 2-D materials such as graphene and study the transmission of molecules through nanoscale defects.Petra Reinke, professor of materials science and engineering, is wrapping up a sabbatical at the University of Groningen/Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials in the Netherlands. She is continuing her research with 2-D materials such as graphene, and studies the transmission of molecules through nanoscale defects.

MMI Retreat Brings New Collaboration
Faculty and students from departments across the engineering school gathered Friday, March 22 at the first annual Multifunctional Materials Integration (MMI) retreat. The nearly 40 participants are part of a cross-disciplinary initiative that embraces grand challenges in engineering and technology which cannot easily be solved by a small team or with experts in only one field.
