About

Gavin Garner joined the University of Virginia faculty in 2009. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Colby College and Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Virginia in both Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He worked as a mechanical engineer for AMF Bowling Worldwide, Inc. before beginning his graduate studies. Dr. Garner is an active member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and was honored as an ASME graduate teaching fellow from 2007 to 2009. He currently serves as the faculty advisor for U.Va.’s student chapters of ASME and Pi Tau Sigma, the international Mechanical Engineering Honor Society.

Engineers Develop Device to Automate Tissue Manufacturing for Muscle Repair

Imagine if muscle stem cells could be harvested from the patient, cultured, and then 3-D printed onto a biocompatible substrate, where they would be stretched and exercised to grow and mature to produce a foldable tissue patch that would then be implanted at the muscle wound site.

The Jefferson Scholars Foundation at the University of Virginia has announced the winners of its 2018 faculty awards. Six UVA faculty members across five different schools were recognized Thursday at a banquet at the foundation, where they received awards totaling $35,000.

Student ‘Gizmologists’ Engineer A Unique Timepiece

A new group of University of Virginia students, the Gizmologists have conceptualized, designed, built, tested and now hung a V (for Virginia)-shaped clock that combines engineering with style, using analog and digital precision-time-keeping functionality. It is a “kinetic art” piece – art that moves.

U.Va. Teams Dominate Engineering Competition

Two teams with four model cars, powered by four separate energy sources, earned first- and second-place finishes for University of Virginia engineering students March 24 at a regional competition sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Mechatronics Rocks

While the video game "Guitar Hero" is a sensation on Grounds, the students in University of Virginia mechanical engineering doctoral student Gavin Garner's Advanced Mechatronics class are less interested in playing a guitar than in building one. It is the hook that Garner uses to engage students in the creative process at the heart...
