    Ingrid Townsend Headshot

    Ingrid Soudek Townsend joined the Engineering faculty in 1973 as the first full-time female faculty of the school. She served as the chair of the STS department for more than seven years. The Townsend Prize, awarded twice a year to the best undergraduate research paper in STS 101, was created to honor her legacy. Townsend retired in May 2008.

    Alf Weaver received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois in 1976. He joined the University of Virginia in 1977 and is now Professor of Computer Science, Chair of the UVA Faculty Senate, and Founding Director of UVA’s Applied Research Institute, where he is working with projects related to national security.
