Ann Reimers
About
Dr. Ann Reimers retired as a full-time educator at UVa in May of 2023, but continues as a part-time academic advisor to Mechanical Engineering students. She is excited to be able to focus on supporting her advisees in their academic, emotional and professional growth.
Professor Reimers held a primary appointment as Assistant Professor, Academic General Faculty, in the Department of Engineering & Society, with a secondary appointment in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering. During her eight years in a UVa classroom, she focused on increasing the availability of hands-on, cross-curricular engineering experiences for students, improving student confidence in choosing their disciplinary path and facilitating student success. She served as academic advisor to both first-year students and mechanical engineering students, specializing in transfer students and those with non-traditional pathways through education. For one semester, she was Acting Director of Student Success, part of the SEAS Undergraduate Dean's Office.
At the state-wide level, Dr. Reimers twice served on panels for the Virginia Department of Education to review and change the instructional framework for the five engineering courses that are taught in Virginia public high schools.
At the UVa Center for Teaching Excellence, Dr. Reimers served as a Teaching Consultant to faculty across the University and as CTE Faculty Fellow. She has presented and published in the educational areas of integrating hands-on, engaging material related to engineering and science into K-12 classrooms, and the accurate assessment of student learning.
Prior to joining UVa, Professor Reimers worked as an electro/mechanical engineer and secondary school educator. Her technical specializations are in the areas of vibration control, magnetostrictive material modeling, and submarine silencing. She taught high school physics, AP physics and chemistry for ten years, also functioning as Science Department Chair and Dean of Faculty. During the 2014-15 academic year, she also served as an education expert for the Department of Energy's Office of Science as an Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow.
