UVA CS Alum Elevated to IEEE Fellow
William & Mary professor and UVA computer science alumnus Gang Zhou has been elevated to IEEE fellow effective in January 2023. The distinction recognizes his “contributions to sensor networks and low-power wireless networks.”The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Board of Directors confers the grade of fellow upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed 1/10 of 1% of the total voting membership.

New Research Will Evaluate Impacts of Social Capital on Access to Safe Well Water

Data Mining Team Earns Best Research Paper Award at KDD 2022
Congratulations to Jing Ma and her co-authors who earned the best research paper award at KDD '22, a premier scientific conference in knowledge discovery and data mining.Conference judges deemed their paper, Learning Causal Effects on Hypergraphs, as best among 1659 research papers submitted.

Professor Dwyer Receives Test-of-Time Award at ISSTA
Congratulations to Professor Matthew Dwyer for receiving Association for Computing Machinery SIGSOFT International Symposium on Software Testing and Analysis Impact Paper Award for “Probabilistic Symbolic Execution” at the ISSTA 2022 conference.The ACM SIGSOFT International Symposium on Software Testing and Analysis (ISSTA) is the leading research symposium on software testing and analysis, bringing together academics, industrial researchers and practitioners to exchange new ideas, problems and experience on how to analyze and test software systems.

Computer Science Associate Professor's Knack for Individualizing Students Earns Him the 2022 Harold S. Morton Jr. Teaching Prize
The Harold S. Morton Jr. Undergraduate Teaching Award for 2022 has been awarded to Raymond Pettit, an associate professor of computer science.
UVA Engineering dean Jennifer L. West announced the award at the School of Engineering and Applied Science's annual reception marking the end of the academic year, during which retiring faculty also are honored. -

Yixin Sun's Research Helps Secure Internet Applications from Routing Attacks
Yixin Sun, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, has published research to help communication network managers strengthen security and privacy-preserving systems.Sun, who holds a joint appointment as the Anita Jones Career Enhancement assistant professor of computer science, collaborated with colleagues at Princeton, Purdue and ETH Zurich to identify risks of routing attacks.

Computer Science Student Hasan Mukati and Assistant Professor Panagiotis Apostolellis Launch App to Promote Good
Fourth year computer science student Hasan Mukati and computer science assistant professor Panagiotis Apostolellis are developing a mobile app called ImpaKarma as part of an independent study. The digital platform allows groups of friends or community members to join forces around a common actionable cause.

CS Research Symposium Poster Session Winners
On Wednesday, December 8, 2021, the CS Graduate Student Group held a Research Symposium in Rice Hall. The event included keynote speakers, faculty talks, and a poster session during which 18 students presented their research. Attendees of the symposium voted on posters and the results are in! Christopher L. Barrett Elected Member of the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine
Christopher L. Barrett, a professor in the Department of Computer Science, has been elected as a member of the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine. Barrett is the UVA Biocomplexity Institute executive director and a Distinguished Professor in Biocomplexity.
