About Jack:
I'm from Palo Alto, California, and I've never really considered doing anything besides Computer Science. My published research is in the field of theoretical adversarially robust ML, but I'm also very interested in CV and NLP, and have significant experience doing research in these areas in industry. In my free time, I simply can't play enough tennis! Access to such high quality athletic facilities may just be what I miss most about UVA come graduation. As I recover from my tennis withdrawal, I'll be focusing on an upcoming move to Austin, Texas, where I'll be living as I work remotely for NEX Team Inc, best known for their CV-based basketball training app, Homecourt. Though my role as an intern was to do ML research in support of the app's core technology, my new full time role will be as a Program Manager of Strategic Initiatives, where I will do additional research, work closely with the C-suite on bizdev strategy, and support or manage partnerships with outside companies like Nike and the NBA.
How Jack achieved success this year:
A focus on independence and a drive to produce excellent work, at all costs, is what drove me to success. Playing a lot of tennis was essential to maintain my mental health. I also believe that travel is the most densely beneficial way one can choose to spend their time, and I sought opportunities to do so whenever possible throughout the pandemic. A strong ability to self-teach is something that can be learned by anyone, and as I skill I've worked throughout college to hone, I find it immeasurably useful, particularly in these trying times.
