The UVA Engineering Foundation is managed by a Board of Trustees that provides fiscal oversight of the Foundation and strategic counsel to the Dean and leadership team. Below is a list of current Board members and their roles.

Jeff R. Crandall
Jeff Crandall served as the Director of the University’s Center for Applied Biomechanics from 1994-2019. His research focuses on understanding human response and injury in automobile safety, sports, and military protection. He has experience with experimental biomechanics spanning the length scales of tissue samples to whole body cadavers.

Lisa supervises the Undergraduate Programs Office and provides comprehensive student support, including academic coaching, advising, advocacy, and major exploration for engineering undergraduates. Len is responsible for staff support of research activities at CAB. This includes facilities management, contract support and personnel management.
Christopher L. Barrett
Christopher L. Barrett is the inaugural Distinguished Professor in Biocomplexity, Executive Director of the Biocomplexity Institute, and Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Virginia. He is an interdisciplinary computational scientist who has published more than 100 research articles.
Meara M. Habashi
Dr. Meara M. Habashi is an expert in social and workplace behaviors who previously led Purdue’s Brock-Wilson Center for Women in Management, which empowers women to overcome gender obstacles in the workplace and prepares students to lead and excel in a diverse workforce and changing social climate.

I am an eco-hydrologist with research spanning the continuum of natural through urban watersheds. A goal is to develop and incorporate principles learned in unmanaged ecosystems as part of urban ecosystem restoration.

Professor Bart-Smith joined the University of Virginia faculty in the fall of 2002. Dr. Bart-Smith came to UVA from Princeton University where she worked at the Princeton Materials Institute with A.G. Evans. Bart-Smith has founded the Multifunctional Materials and Structures Laboratory and the Bio-inspired Engineering Research Laboratory.

Dr. Horowitz joined the University of Virginia’s faculty as a Professor in the Systems Engineering degree program in September 2001, after an industrial career involving the application of systems engineering to many large and complex systems. He assumed the role of Department Chair in 2009.

Benton H. Calhoun received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Computer Science from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, in 2000. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, in 2002 and 2006, respectively.

In research, Johnson is best known for her work on computer ethics and engineering ethics. She published one of the first textbooks on computer ethics in 1985.

John A. Hossack develops ultrasound imaging approaches for cardiovascular disease, including mouse heart imaging, catheter-based imaging and drug delivery, and molecular imaging for diagnosing stroke risk. He obtained B.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Strathclyde and his postdoc at Stanford University.

Kevin Janes designs and uses systems bioengineering approaches to analyze cell signaling and transcriptional networks in cancer and infectious disease.

Joe Thompson joined the NMCF as a Laboratory Specialist, also providing analysis for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). He specializes in Raman Spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, and Optical and Electron Microscopies.
